Photographic Friday: Abandoned

March 27, 2010

Randolph is a tiny town in farm country Iowa.
I wonder for how much longer the town will going on living.
It has a library, post office, and bank, but not many  people.
I don’t know how many people dream of leaving the big city for an aging hamlet.
This is the end of Main Street.
Abandoned bricks and broken windows.
It stands tall and lonely across from the train depot.
What was it?  Hotel?  Boarding house?
How much longer will it stand before it crumbles?

Gosh – I am always fascinated by places like this, and I wonder about the people who built it and lived there and where they went. So neat!

Places like this fascinate me, sadden me & sometimes haunt me because I want to know their histories and often can't find that out.

Before I scrolled down to what you wrote, I thought this looked like a building in the small town in Iowa my mom grew up in. It's not the same town but the same idea. So sad that the small towns are dying. The one my dad grew up in has the library I talked about a few weeks ago, a swimming pool and a grocery still but no where for anyone to stay and no real restaurant.

I was thinking "sad and eerie" — then I was like, "It could just as easily be the totally unromantic busted-up building across from my gym in NYC." That cheered me up.

What a neat old building. I like to wonder about stuff like this too and sometimes I don't want to know what it was… I like my version better. 😉
