It’s Friday evening and this is what I’m thinking…

May 30, 2009

Travel lightly.

I’ve decided that as long as my alarm clock goes off at 4:45 AM and I have a kid at home I’m going to be a short hair person.

All the girls at work are going to San Diego this summer and I‘m only going to Iowa. What is wrong with this picture? Of course, there is nothing wrong with Iowa, but last I heard there isn’t a beach there. And no, Lake Manawa doesn’t count.

What is summer to you? To me it is tomatoes and basil and Coppertone and charcoal.

Sometimes we want more than someone can give. But that’s okay. That’s life…”When a couple has an argument nowadays they may think it s about money or power or sex or how to raise the kids or whatever. What they’re really saying to each other, though without realizing it, is this: “You are not enough people!“ — Kurt Vonnegut

This is my 21st “Friday Thoughts” post.

I want but don’t need and am finally figuring out it’s not about the having but the enjoying and experiencing. Don’t scrimp on the experiencing. Splurge.

Shut your mind from the outside world, let the words flow out from your fingers. It’s amazing what you have inside when you let go. No rules. Just you.

Monsoon season starts in two and a half weeks. I’m hoping for some big storms.

Our new fire engine red duvet cover from IKEA makes me very very happy. Feeling cozy and cool at the same time makes me happy.

The batteries in the bathroom scale died and I’m not going to replace them (yet.) Maybe in a month or two. I’ve decided to go numberless for now.

We have a lot of new cars at our house…muscle cars, race cars, red cars, green cars. And a truck.

Oh how I enjoyed your Friday thoughts!

Summer to me is barefoot walks in the grass and the smell of fresh cut grass. The sounds of the cicadas keeping me up at night and dancing in the warm rain with my boys.

Thank you for this post! Enjoy your weekend. =)

I also really enjoy reading your Friday thoughts.
And you will have a blast with family in Iowa, even without a beach!

Hey, where in Iowa is your family? My brother lives in Des Moines, and I went to school at U of I in Iowa City! Small world!

    Sydney,
My husband is from Council Bluffs and I went to ISU, and my mom lives in Iowa City right now. So we’ll be hitting all three places on our trip.

You wrote, “…am finally figuring out it’s not about the having but the enjoying and experiencing. Don’t scrimp on the experiencing. Splurge.” Amen to that! Life gets so much better when one starts doing this!

“Don’t scrimp on the experiencing. Splurge”…I really like the way you put this.

Summer for me is tomatoes and basil too. Lightening bugs and nice, gentle breezes off the water also are summer for me.

Yesterday the sun was shining and a a comfortable, mild wind blew in from the Harbor. It was a perfect day to be outside, so I had a cook-out for Scrumptious Saturday. It made me feel really good to cook delicious food for my friends using basil, mint and sage grown in my own backyard.

I plan on living this summer by your little “don’t scrimp” comment. You only live once…I don’t want to look back and be saddened by the fact that I didn’t do more when I could. And being numberless is great. I only weigh myself once a month, if at all…I go by how I feel, not what the number on the scale says I should feel.

What a cool idea. I enjoyed this post! And thanks for your comment – I’ve always been fascinated by clouds, too.
