“The ballet makes us look at those bodies, it makes us listen to that music, it makes us wonder at the geometry, of the way they come together. The way that extraordinary space is controlled and given such emotional force. ” —John Guare
A few of you asked me about my family and ballet…
Before starting a family, before becoming a GC, my dad (above) danced with San Francisco Ballet and Ballet West. My brother will be dancing professionally with Nevada Ballet this year. My sister teaches dance. The littlest one of our bunch is well on her way to becoming a ballerina; at 6-years-old she already has people asking about her. I’m the only one who has never particularly liked ballet. I remember the first time my parents took me to see The Nutcracker…I was so disappointed when they told me there was no talking in ballets. However, I did enjoy playing with my dad’s old costumes which were encrusted with jewels fit enough for a princess. I do have a certain appreciation for what the body is capable of, and while I love the costumes, I’m still not one for a night at the ballet. I’ll leave that to all my relations.

I agree, very interesting and thank you for sharing this tid bit. I longed to be a ballerina when I was young. I loved The Nutcracker (and still do) but my shyness kept me from it. (And Mom’s criticisms). Then I discovered basket ball, lol! And played for a few years until I injured my knee.

That is really cool to have that in your family – very interesting! I’ve never enjoyed ballet. But I’ve also never really been exposed to it. And I could definitely never do anything like it..lol.

Wow–how interesting! Does your dad still dance at all? My husband wanted to be a ballet dancer when he was a kid, but his family and friends teased him so much, he quickly abandoned any thought of it.

Wow, that’s really cool! I took ballet and modern dance classes for a as a kid, but I was by no means ever going to be a professional. Few people are–your family is very unique!
