A Gem of A Gal

May 7, 2009

Happy Birthday to the woman…who had 4 children under age 3, and then went on to have 2 more…who looked dashing and smashing in her WAVES uniform…who drove across country with 6 kids in a van…whose high school nickname was Chatterbox…who is still a Girl Scout…who used to row at Wellesley and will show you how if you ask her…who wants to know “are we having fun yet?“…who has followed the footsteps and wagon tracks of Laura Ingalls Wilder in more ways than one…who butchered chickens in Strawberry as a newlywed…who may or may not have mixed up the twins (maybe you’re really my mom Meggan!)…who is at home on a boat – a dinghy, a canoe, or a schooner…whose life has spanned two centuries and both coasts…who was born before women could vote and is now one of the most political persons I know…who always has a project in the works and a clipboard nearby…who enjoys treating herself to a hot fudge sundae…who is at peace in nature…who gets better with age…whose name I share, Elizabeth Knowlton…who passed on the love of a ten-key to me…who, word has it, used to speed through New Jersey with her mother…who has a thing for cheese, like me…who use to buzz the ships with some flyboys…who isn’t afraid to wear red lipstick…who really is a ham…who always has a do-gooder thing going on…who I think of whenever I sing “White Choral Bells” to Beau…who raised a wonderful family…who would rather not eat cucumbers, but will eat tomato aspic…who loves trains like her father did…who could be called the Camping Queen…who I come to appreciate and admire more each day…

Happy 92nd Birthday to you Grandma E.K.!
Enjoy yourself some applesauce cake!

We love you!

Very sweet! I loved this…I’ve got a 90 year old grandma who I think is amazing too. You made me think of her and smile and I thank you for that 🙂

That was an amazing life tribute…Your grandmother sounds like an extrodinary woman beyond her time. I love to talk to elderly people. They have so much to share.
